This Foundation was created in remembrance of my dear departed father, Shri Dharam Pal Gupta. He was born in Alwar, Rajasthan on June 22, 1926. To our immediate family, he was a “man of education” with a kind and benevolent heart, ever willing to help those in need. After graduating from Delhi University with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Philosophy, he taught Philosophy as a Lecturer at Hindu College, Delhi University. Shri Dharam Pal Gupta was a career officer of the Indian Police Service, Rajasthan cadre. He retired in June 1984 with the rank of Director General of Police (“DGP”).

My father was above all else … a philosopher. He was a deep thinker and a voracious reader of books with over a thousand books in his personal library. After retirement, he travelled frequently to Houston, Texas, U.S.A. to witness the formation and growth of my first company. In subsequent years, he studied a variety of subjects including law, economics, geo-politics, and philosophy. I was always awestruck by his sharp intellect and acumen in these varied subjects, which he ably debated with various intellectuals in business settings in Houston.

Philosophically, he believed that “education”, which he defined as “the acquisition of relevant knowledge and experience during our respective lifetimes” was the ultimate equalizer of the differences between people from various backgrounds, whether economic, religious, or cultural. He believed that with essential and critical support of friends and family, every young person, boy or girl, can achieve great success in life. Putting his belief into practice, notwithstanding the financial hardship, my parents forsook all of our family savings to send me to the U.S.A. in 1975 to further my studies in engineering and mathematics. Decades later, I discovered the details of the financial sacrifice made by my parents in a file that contained a bank passbook and a letter describing the terms of the loan he had undertaken to meet my travel and education expenses. The enormity of their sacrifice and their faith in me to have undertaken such a significant financial risk for my benefit, remains my life’s most profound realization and humbling experience.

Establishing this foundation is an appropriate method to honour my father’s memory and legacy. Simultaneously, this allows me to share the fruits of my successes in a special manner with those serving in the Rajasthan Police community, to which I and my family belong, by affording this opportunity to the next generation for select higher education, experience, and success in life. Please Note: The Founders have no malintent to denigrate in any manner the excellent education in science and technology that is available today at various colleges and universities in India. In addition, the Founders recognize that India-based business organizations offer opportunities today that are at par and/or superior to those available in the U.S.A. and other countries. The reason for offering scholarships exclusively at U.S.A.- based institutions is that our diversified business infrastructure is based in Houston, Texas, U.S.A., which makes it easier for the Founders to be engaged with the scholar’s progress, proactively. Additionally, this permits nurturing the professional growth of Foundation scholars after completing their studies
